Exercise: Brel and Mercury and Waits

Watch the three videos below. Think about the following themes, and write down a stream of consciousness response afterwards. 500 words would be ideal but don’t censor yourself.

• How and for what purpose does each performer use their hands?

• What are the performers objectives in the performance? If he had his way, what action would the audience take?

• Where does each performer seem to store/feel their emotions? What parts of the body are most characteristic?

• What are the Chekhovian centers/relationships for each performer? What center leads them?
